Located twenty miles east of Havelock and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Morehead City, part of the Crystal Coast, is known for its maritime community, recreational activities, shopping and fine dining. Visitors and locals enjoy the amenities and conveniences that are available. Morehead City is one of the state's two deep-water ports and just east of the Port Authority ships dock from around the world.
Morehead City has been cited as a top diving area for wreck diving, big animal dives, and a healthy marine environment. The Crystal Coast has some of the finest beaches and fishing waters on the east coast making it a top area for water activities including boat charters, water sking, pier fishing, dinner and harbor cruises, or just relaxing on the beach. The famous Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is held every June and is one of the largest sport fishing tournaments of its kind. The area offers accommodations for the transient boating community. Slips, permanent dockage, mechanical and towing services plus a wide range of full service marinas are available through out the city. In a boating emergency, Fort Macon Coast Guard Station is close by ready to assist all mariners.
For those who prefer land life, Morehead City offers a wide variety of shopping and dining. The waterfront offers gift and craft shops, antique stores, art galleries, fresh seafood markets, and great restaurants. In October, the North Carolina Seafood Festival is held at the waterfront. Visit The Carteret County Museum of History and Art located downtown or The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores featuring twenty-two tanks that are home to moray eels, octopus, sea horses, alligators and other animals native to North Carolina waters. For the golf enthusiast, the area offers many fine golf courses. The Crystal Coast Civic Center hosts exhibitions such as The Home Show, NC Commerical Fishing Show, Arts and Crafts shows and entertainment throughout the year.
Just a short drive over the bridge, you'll find Atlantic Beach, the oldest resort town on Bogue Banks. Lined with restaurants, shops, amusement centers, piers, public beach access, and of course, 385 acres of dunes, beach, and forest at the historic Fort Macon State Park. Fort Macon, a five-sided brick fortress built between 1826 and 1834. It is named for state senator Nathaniel Macon. Fort Macon is the most visited park in North Carolina with an annual 1.3million visitors.
